A Report on National Conference “Ethics in Business and Economics” held on December 30, 2017, at Government College Karsog, District Mandi (HP)-175011
A One-Day National Conference on the topic entitled “Ethics in Business and Economics” was conducted by Government College Karsog under the aegis of ICSSR North Western Regional Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Himachal Pradesh Commerce and Management Association (HPCMA) on December 30, 2017. Shri J.L. Negi, CGM RBI and Banking Ombudsman (HP, Punjab and Chandigarh) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Professor Karamjeet Singh and Dr Ran Singh were the Guest of Honour in the Inaugural function. Professor Dinesh Gupta, Panjab University Chandigarh delivered the keynote address in which he emphasized the need for ethics in Business and Economics. About fifty participants registered at the conference and presented their research papers. After the inaugural ensued the Plenary Session under the chairmanship of Professor Karamjeet Singh and it was co-chaired by Dr. Gurcharan Singh. Professor Raj Kumar from Himachal Pradesh University delivered his talk on the topic Need for Ethics in Business and Economics. He quoted some verses from the Bhagavad Gita and reiterated the point that ethical thinking is the first prerequisite for Business and Economics. Following the topic of the conference, Professor Kulbhushan Chandel (Department of Commerce, Himachal Pradesh University) too talked at great length about the paramount importance of ethical codes in the field of business. The Plenary Session was followed by a sumptuous lunch.
In the Post-Lunch session, the concurrent technical sessions were organized in three different places in the institution. In Technical Session-I, the delegates presented their papers under the chairmanship of Professor Devinder Sharma, (HoD, Department of Commerce, HPU) and co-chair Dr. Ajay Chaudhary. The rapporteur of the session was Dr. Rajiv. The best paper of the Technical session was presented by Dr. Dhruv Pal Singh as he dealt with an in-depth analysis of the topic “Ethical Crises in Private Healthcare Operators in India''.
The Technical Session II was chaired by Professor Ran Singh (Punjabi University, Patiala), co-chaired by Dr Gurcharan Singh and the rapporteur for the session was Dr Varun Saini. The first presentation of the session was in the form of a collective effort by Dr. Ram Lal, Dr Pyare Lal and Dr Prem Prakash where they talked about ethical consumer behaviour in Himachal Pradesh. Dr Vijeta Sharma presented the paper on the topic entitled “A Study of SHG Bank Linkage Model of Financial Inclusion” based on a random sampling of 540 samples. Shri
Kulbhushan Sharma presented his paper on the topic entitled “Thinking Ethically Ethical: Snapshots from RK Narayan’s The Vendor of Sweets.” The main focus of the paper was on the ethical perspective of Indian Moral Values. Shri Anupam Sharma dealt with the topic “Business Ethics: Some Issues and Approaches” where he talked about the need and rationale behind the ethics. He emphasized the business motives that determine business ethics. Dr. Varun Saini presented his paper “Delving into a New Approach of CSR-Responsibility towards Company Stakeholders” where he talked about the ten principles of Company Stakeholder Responsibility. The session concluded with stimulating remarks by the chair on different presentations of the session.
In Technical Session III, the first paper presentation was by Dr Labh Singh on the topic “Relevance of Ethics in Business and Economics in Context to the Indian Society”. He explained the traditional and the modern approaches to ethics in business and economics. He pointed out the CSR expenditure by the industries and finally concluded by focussing on the universal nature of ethics. The second paper was presented by Dr. Satish Kumar on the topic “Ethics in Business: An Indian Perspective” wherein he based his research on secondary data emphasizing the point that ethics is a branch of Philosophy that includes principles and values. By reiterating corporate responsibility, the paper discussed the unethical practices in various business sectors and, therefore, a need for strict laws and rules to be framed. He also advocated the role of society in removing unethical practices in Business. Dr. Latesh Kapoor presented her paper entitled “Business Ethics and Values: Ancient Wisdom”. She discussed in great detail the role of religion in business and the role holy books can play in business. She enumerated the unethical means in business and how they can be curbed.
In the Valedictory Session, Dr Rakesh Bhardwaj, Principal, of Government College, Jukhala graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Dr RK Kaistha, Principal, of Government College Anni, as the Guest of Honour. The Chief Guest talked about the need for ethics in Business and Economics. The chief guest distributed the certificates to the delegates and the paper presenters.
